Big sound. For a bass player cutting through a mix of two guitars in a band requires it. Having it to support the drummer is a necessity. Juan's approach to sound is a pretty simple, straightforward affair. He doesn't rely on a bunch of effects to get the sound he wants. Of all the members of Jerico, Juan's set up is as true to plug and play as you can get.  For amplification, Juan chose arguably one of the best set ups in the industry; A 300 watt all tube Ampeg SVT-CL pushing an Ampeg SVT 410 HLF 4X 10 enclosure.

Juan's main bass is a Peavey Fury V which holds down a smooth, solid groove while still coaxing an aggressive tone growl from the Ampeg tubes when he wants it.  On songs that require a more vintage sound, Juan uses his 1983 Washburn Force 4. Its been slightly modified with Seymour Duncan active eq pick-ups to give it a great slap sound when the need arises. On occasion, Juan will also break out his black fretless to add an interesting tonal depth to some of the songs that Jerico performs. Simplicity had its definite advantages, but only when you choose the right gear to hold down a bands' foundation.
